My journey to the consulting role

No path is straight and the journey to the goal can look different for everyone. But what's the goal? And what do you do when you come forward? In the end, I realized that the goal is what you decide it to be and for me, right now, the trip is the goal.

My name is Rebecca and I work as a consultant through Hammer & Hanborg.

When I graduated, I went out hunting to find a clear goal with my life. Now you would be preparing to become an adult and that meant keeping track of who you are and why. I started working on a couple of jobs at the same time and applied to university. That way I would reach my goal sooner. I've been on a variety of tracks, for a while I was absolutely sure that my profession in life was a nurse, then I would become a psychologist and then an economist. The more crossroads I met, the more I understood that it is an impossibility to decide what to do for the rest of their lives. I started thinking about how I could avoid choosing, at least for now.

Consulting was for me a foreign profession. I thought it was only allowed to become a consultant if you were a senior and expert in a specific field. But then I heard that there was a student consulting company on the campus where I studied. I became interested directly and soon I was employed and started consulting alongside the studies. My assignment involved supporting a company in their work with their digital channels. After I graduated, I continued as a consultant and had the opportunity to work in a variety of assignments, for both small and large companies.

Today I sit in a large marketing department together with experts in many market areas. As a consultant, I have the opportunity to work in several of these areas and jump in where necessary. This gives me a varied job where I have the opportunity to influence my role and my own development. It suits me perfectly!

Today I know that the consulting role can suit everyone, regardless of seniority. Consulting gives me the opportunity to work widely in several areas for different companies. I have no longer set a clear goal with a final station but take every day as it comes and enjoy the journey.
