Understanding what motivates each individual and creating the conditions for them to perform as well as possible is therefore one of the most important success factors for today's organizations.

In my work with organisations in transition, I have seen the importance of engaging employees early in the process. You need to get everyone to understand what change is about at all levels, and understand how it affects them as an individual. It is also important for the commitment to feel that you can and may influence your situation, whether it is your work or role in the team.

Fundamental to feeling motivated and committed is that we

  • understand the purpose of what we do
  • experiencing a development that moving forward
  • may switch on our self-government

Everyone must be able to make relevant decisions and act on opportunities, and also have the will to do so. When the business is largely run by employees, high engagement is a must, and a motivated employee sees opportunities and takes advantage of them.

Do you know what motivates your employees? Then you're on the right track! Only 41% of 1,500 surveyed Nordic leaders know what is engaging and motivating the employees of their own team (NES 2018). So more than half do not know what are important factors for individuals to be able to perform as well as possible.

To increase the motivation of a team, everyone is required to be treated in a way that strengthens his or her commitment. In organizations of the future where everyone is leaders, the team must get to know each other so well that they know what everyone needs and what motivates and demotivates each person.

For us at Hammer Hanborg it is a given part of the recruitment process to map the individual's motivation and commitment – it is an important piece of the puzzle to find the right person to the right place.
