Identify experiences and lessons learned and get out of the crisis stronger

Hammer & Hanborg has been around for more than 25 years and during these years several major crises have arisen in our world such as the IT crash and the global financial crisis that the company has gone through. Åsa Falkman, one of the company's founders shares their experiences.

How has Hammer & Hanborg handled previous crises? “My experience is that it is important to quickly understand how this is affecting us right? How can we protect the company and at the same time act responsibly towards everyone who has given us their confidence? This applies to customers, candidates, suppliers, partners and not least all employees. How, in turn, are they affected by what happens?

And you have to dare to act and make decisions based on the perhaps scarce information you have. You can always change and make new decisions.

Another important part is, of course, to nurture their relationships so it will be easy to resume any collaborations that may be left behind. This way, you are also early in feeling when it starts to turn. It has really been our rescue through previous crises. We have been there for our customers and candidates when it turned around. "

Are there any differences in the current crisis compared to previous crises? “This is a pandemic so there is a health aspect to take into account that we have not been aware of before. We followed the reporting of the virus and acted quickly within the framework that we could control ourselves. We were one step ahead of the recommendations of the Public Health Authority and made an early decision on telework to protect our employees from unnecessary health risks. We were also keen to have an early dialogue with our consultants working with our clients.

In this crisis, I feel more than before is that many try to help each other by adapting their business to the new conditions that customers and suppliers now have. There is a desire that together we can try to keep ahead of future activities as well. "

How has the transition to full-time teleworking worked? “One lesson we learned is that it becomes even more important to have a close relationship with all employees despite being at a distance, so we start the day with a short video meeting, a check-in. We have been introducing self-leadership to an increasing extent for several years and it has really blossomed even more during this time. I am so impressed with our staff! I feel that internal cooperation has been strengthened and that many new ideas are born out of this new situation. This applies to all parts of our business.

We have continued to deliver expertise to both consulting services and permanent recruitment despite the fact that we do not have physical meetings. It works extremely well as both customers and candidates are ticked off at the opportunity.

Our planned seminars in the spring were quickly turned into webinars. In fact, we have until now completed 18 and are planning many more. We have several collaborations with giants who work near us. Together with them we have succeeded in having a high digital presence. Our ambition has been to be generous with knowledge. I think what we've been waiting for so long for the gig economy to boom will happen after Corona.

We have generally become more digital in our way of working and thinking and we want to continue to develop that. "

Are there any lessons to be learned and what companies should think about in the future? “What has become very evident for many organizations is that they have introduced teleworking. What lessons can you learn from it? The fact that many work from home places other demands on both leadership and organization. We can bring these experiences with us even after the crisis. It is perhaps an excellent opportunity to look at how you are organized.

When we get into new situations, it is important to navigate forward and dare to try again. It is a great opportunity to work with innovation and to involve the whole business in it. We must think about what is needed in the present and in the future.

Since there is great uncertainty about when it will be "after the crisis", it is important to adapt constantly and be prepared to make changes to the situation. One example is to regularly review their goals to help keep motivation up. It is important to agree on common goals that you work towards together. In this way you can help each other to pull gear when it feels brave.

It is important to seize the opportunity to identify what experiences and lessons you can bring into the future in order to succeed even better and thus have the opportunity to even step out of the crisis. "
